Ailsa’s travel theme this week is: “WOOD.” Themes inspire others to share thoughts and/or images of common subjects.
The 2181 mile (3510 km) Appalachian Trail meanders east over an often wet area in Vernon, New Jersey, off SR 517. The wonderful volunteers may not be the best surveyors in the world, but they do create interesting boardwalks!
Less than a mile further east is this impressively constructed wood and cable suspension bridge, taking the trail over Pochuck Creek.
Rest benches offer an opportunity to stop and appreciate the selfless and skilled work of the trail volunteers.
Oh I do love boardwalks, easy going through tricky terrain and a great sense of anticipation … where is it leading? Lovely images 🙂
Thanks for your comment. The AT traverses the eastern mountain ranges of the US from Georgia to Maine, mostly connecting all the highest points, but of course crossing rivers, streams and creeks in-between. This area is just that, and a few miles later it ascends into the highlands of extreme northern NJ; lower New York (state) park lands, and across the Hudson River at Bear Mountain. It’s a treasure for walkers and nature lovers – and of course long distance hiking. M

I think we hiked parts of the Appalachian Trail when we drove the Blue Ridge Parkway back in the mid-80s.
We met a number of hikers, including some who were hiking it alone.
