Forgotten Roads and Rusting Guardians

Still common in many rural areas, cable and concrete (or wood) posts were the savior of countless vehicles headed for trees and ditches in early and mid 20th Century America.

    Image

Designed to spread the impact forces over the long length of the cables, they reduced injury and saved lives as the cables “gave” and absorbed energy in their stretching and end anchoring systems.

Recently, I came across these two vestiges in Bergen County, New Jersey, still intact along side their abandoned roads. The first, above, was Fort Lee Road, formerly a minor artery across the Overpeck Meadowlands, just west of the George Washington Bridge. It was displaced by Interstate 95/80 nearly 50 years ago.

Below is old US Rt. 9W now a walking trail in the State Line Lookout area of Alpine, New Jersey, formerly the only road along the top of the Palisades overlooking the Hudson River, replaced by the current Palisades Interstate Parkway some 60 years ago.

Dreaming of Things to Come…

OK, we’re a bit tired of winter’s black and white, and now dirty gray. Our recent Florida escape just made us more eager to smell the flowers, and roses and freshness of nature.

Last summer… we had the extreme satisfaction of doing just that, at the Biltmore Estate, where among its grandeur, – multiple gardens stretch the envelope of sensuous satisfaction for that very desire we all crave,* particularly after an especially harsh winter (*…except maybe those with allergies!)

Here are some images from within its Italian Garden.

ImageSituated on 120,000 acres, there are remarkable gardens, specifically engineered forests, ponds and features all accessible by walking trails, and maintained to the ideals set in the late 1800’s by world-famous designer Frederick Law Olmsted (think NYC’s “Central Park.”) There is also a world-class winery for tasting and exploration, and tours of the estates themselves.

Three Days of Summer, Sandy Paw’s Winter Get-away (Part 2)

After a couple of long days on the road, we delighted in the warm, wonderful sunshine of South Florida, relishing in outdoor waterside eateries, and soft sandy beaches. Sandy Paws enjoyed exploring new grounds and meeting ODD friends.

Carefully sniffing the fauna on Bowman’s Beach, Sanibel Island

In a small rental boat, we explored backwater mangrove islands,

Colorful waters and condos,

new types of friends,

pristine beaches,

and across “New Channel,” sighted a special beach, … for DOGS!!! (Whoo Hooo!)

Image

Sandy Paws was a little intimidated at first by the BIG dogs playing…

but quickly fell in love with a cute canine friend – a back beach romance.

Unfortunately, it was soon time to go,

stopping first at the doggie shower

and saying goodbye as the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico.

Dedicated in memory of Shep, Sandy Paw’s best friend…

1500 Miles (2414 km) to “Summer”

Recently in these posts, Sandy Paw’s paws were seen freezing in the icy cold of North Jersey’s winter.    She was sad!Image

So, after a haircut, we drove her 1500 miles (2414 km,) over three days to South Florida, out of reach of yet another winter storm.  She was patient…

Image

pleased with over-night accommodations…

Image

basked in the first warm sunny food stop…

Image

felt revitalized when first dining at waterside restaurants…

Image

and happy as a flying eared puppy when she reached the beaches of Bonita Springs, Florida – with summer-like temperatures and plenty of sunshine!

Image

Be sure to see her fleeting encounter with puppy-love along the Florida gulf coast, and other discoveries, as her vacation continues…  in my next post!
