Coinciding with our vacation to Bermuda last week, was the America’s Cup Yacht Preliminaries.
Although all the 50′ catamarans are essencially the same, teams have virtually unlimited options as to trimming and power usage, including navigating savvy, and human endurance. For example, Emirates utilizes bicycle-like human power stations, while Oracle uses the more traditional hand cranked “grinders.” The science of these vessels and the methods employed are awesome, details of which can be found here .

They do look neat, but it doesn’t seem the same with these twin-hulls and hydrofoils. Not that I have any preference as I don’t follow the sport, but these boats don’t evoke the same kind of feeling/image. This feels more like a business . . . no, perhaps the difference between formula one driving and stock car racing. A different level altogether.
I totally agree. And yes, it is a very well managed and lucrative business. We didn’t submit to the pricy trinkets, opting instead just for photographs. But the sheer science of the pursuit, and the abilities of the highly trained crews is fascinating. M 🙂
I watched the rich play out here in San Diego in 1995. There are a couple of America’s Cup-class yachts here that give tourist rides. I’ve been several times. Quite fun.
