50 Years Ago – Earth from the Moon

The crew of Apollo 8, on this very evening (Christmas Eve) exactly 50 years ago, were the first humans to orbit the moon and take the iconic photograph above as they looked back at Earth. It was one of the most emotional moments of my life, as we watched on television, mesmerized by a feat which is still hard to comprehend today.  For years I would have a 2 x 3-foot poster of this image above my desk at my place of work, and for the past 4 or 5 years, it has often been the banner of these WordPress posts.

William Anders, James Lovell, Frank Borman,

As usual, thanks for viewing.  Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays to all. M 🙂

  1. Many a time I’ve wished I was looking at the same sight (especially now) . . . then, I remember . . . no Spam in space.

    *sigh*

    Happy memories and happy holidays.

    1. You never know. Spam may be the latest and greatest power food for long-term space travel. In fact, I think I saw a can of it portrayed on board the recent manned flights to Mars on the Nat Geo series!
      🙂

  2. Just catching up on last year’s posts Marty … yes I was just like you on that day and probably all the moon mission days after – it seemed like we were heading somewhere fast, but it’s very slow now there is no “race”. Hope I’m not too old to see a return to the Moon if not Mars – long live Elon Musk, and all the wealthy visionaries competing for the prize of being first.
