HURRICANE ONCE AGAIN – Grand Isle, Louisanna

Yesterday, 8/29/21 – It is likely a small barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico, some miles south of New Orleans, was devastated one more time. Two friends and I were there (a driving vacation from NJ to New Orleans) slightly less than a year after Hurricane Betsy (1965) nearly wiped Grand Isle off the map. The images below were taken on August 21, 1966.

A year after the gulf beach road was pretty much wiped away, we were there (in the foreground) trying to cool off, (not happening!) and recuperate from the previous night on Bourbon Street.

Thanks for viewing, and comments are always welcome. M 🙂

I hope everything is ok in New Orleans. I saw the news about the cyclone. I guess it’s too early to see the damage.

    1. EJ: First I appoligize if this reply comment comes twice. The computer and I am having a quarrel. I had recently seen “Forest Gump” again and yes the real boats down there were well characterized by the scenes of Forest on his shrimp boat in the movie! I have a few more slides from that particular trip back so many years ago (slides long ago processed in Aperture,) which may someday find their way in another Word Press post. M 🙂

    2. I did get two notices, but there’s no need to apologize. I don’t interact with too many people so it’s exciting getting an extra notice. Almost makes me feel like I’m a social butterfly, it does.

  2. Your post reminded me of our visit to Nawlins for Mardi Gras shortly after your journey. We partied a tad too much one night on Bourbon Street and I had to get my little brother to the airport the next morning. He had to report for duty at an Air Force base in South Carolina later that day. He made it, but just barely!

    1. Unfortunately, but not unexpected, the devastation on Grand Isle was epic last week due to Hurricane Ida. And, a few days later, the remnants ot that storm, created unprecidented flooding with insane amounts of rainfall in the North-East, including much of northern New Jersey and southern New York State, …including NYC.

  3. My heart goes out to those struggling with hurricane season – same as folks in my ‘circle’ send missives out when a blizzard or tornado hits here – this year? been pretty lucky except for the ongoing drought – Somehow, wouldn’t be nice if sump-pumps could clear flooding out from one area and deliver some slow dripping irrigation to another? Or Firefighters could just scoop it up and drop on wildfires? Sigh – wouldn’t that be nice…..

    1. I like your thoughs on this, but …not going to happen. There likey ARE thiings that can mitigate the effects of global warming, that mankind can impliment, but politics sometimes seems to lean otherwise. I respect all viewpoints, as they are the beliefs and views of individuals, but …common sense sometimes is not the same for all. M 🙂

      1. I still hold hope in my heart a budding engineer will design a vehicle that runs if bug bodies that fly into the intake/front grill and used kleenex during winter cold/flu season. Unrealistic i grant u. But i still hold hope in my heart. Someday! 🤣
