Golfing in Snow – at Zero (F.) Degrees!

25 years ago this week, in 1993, we came across this guy at the Sagamore Resort above Lake George, New York. We were sledding and cross-country skiing (or at least trying,) and HE….was apparently frozen stiff!

The wind-chill temperature on the mountain above Lake George was 0 (F,) (-18C.)!

As always, click on the image for a closer look and if you see his golf ball, contact The Samaore Resort, Bolton Landing, N.Y.                Comments are encouraged…

The Good, The Bad and the Frightened! FOXTROT TANGLE?

This week saw my neighbor’s fenced-in yard as a snowy overnight sanctuary for a small herd of deer.

Status Quo! Content between walking around, relaxing and sleeping.
One deer always remained outside the sanctuary, all night and morning, almost as a guard. They remained until early afternoon each day before hopping over the fence for their daily parade for food through the back-woods.
Yesterday, things were dramatically different! All the deer were gone, replaced by “Foxtrot Tangle!”

But was it the nearby Gray Squirrel who REALLY felt threatened?

First reaction: hide head in snow!
“Ohhhh! He still sees me!”
“I’ll just hide here on the other side of the tree!”

You can’t make this stuff up, folks. In time frame, this is exactly as it happened, except the deer images were taken one day prior.  But on this actual day, the deer were there an hour before I noticed their absence, replaced by the fox. The fox` and the squirrel (outside the fenced area,)  were photographed in quick succession actually looking towards each other, at a distance of about 25 yards.

“Great Scott!” er… SPOT – Jupiter Collides with EARTH!

I dreamed that the Earth was being threatened by Jupiter’s “Great Red Spot!”

dsc_0089

No, that’s not really true, not even the dream part.  BUT, the clouds above do look a little like planet Jupiter’s atmosphere with its “Great ‘Red’ Spot,” just above and behind the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant here in New Jersey! Furthermore, the smokestack may be attempting to suck power out of the “spot,” as JCP&L investigates more sustainable energy sources; similar to my previous suggestion raised  about New York’s Con Ed last year,  here,

For reference, here is the real thing: (Stock photo from Wikipedia.)

And below, my younger day’s attempt at “astrophotography.”

Jupiter and its “Great Red Spot” (8″ f/12 reflector, 75x; EXA 35  mm SLR, 1/25th sec. Tri-X B&W film,) captured a long, long time ago in my parents back yard, way before digital imaging, and by today’s standards – pretty meager!

DSC_0548DSC_0654DSC_0643DSC_0550DSC_0660DSC_0637DSC_0675DSC_0620 - Version 2Located in NW New Jersey, Frogg Falls Railroad is the dream and inspiration of our lifelong friends, who have transformed a part of their property to a magical, fully functional garden railroad, complete with a wide assortment of “rolling stock,”  handmade scale structures complemented by remarkable “to scale” living landscaping,  and a Koi and frog populated pond with waterfalls.

“There’s a Moon Out Tonight” Make that FIVE! – Co-Starring Jupiter and The Four Moons

Some astronomy pastime tonight (March 21, 2016,) as Jupiter and the moon were pretty close together in the eastern sky about two hours after sunset.

PROOF! Con Edison Sucking Energy from Sun!

DSC_00902/6/16, 7:06 AM Solar energy being sucked into one smokestack of the East River Generating Plant, Manhattan. Note the proximity of the Con Edison headquarters and its suspicious “Tower of Light” on the left.

DSC_0062

At 7:02:40, just 4 minutes prior, the sun is seen right behind the Con Ed Building, a 26 story tower completed in 1928 serving as a testament to the company’s power and influence over New York City.

DSC_0123

A few days later, 2/11/16,  a closer vantage point reveals the suspicious proximity of the so called smokestacks (actually a mile further) to Con Ed’s odd looking, bronze Tower of Light.

No issues here…whatever their methods, Consolidated Edison has served the needs of most of New York City and Westchester County for over 150 years providing steam, gas and electrical energy.

Oh, and yes…the first photo, in fact, shows an interesting optical refraction of the sun’s image by the heat rising from that one smokestack.

Christmas Eve Romance? You Can’t Make This Stuff Up!

DSC_0348

This morning, Christmas Eve 2015, I sighted these reindeer (ok maybe not REINDEER!) right in our backyard. The one above sported a really nice set of antlers.

Just off to the right, was another, apparently eyeing the first.

DSC_0354

Male, Female – whatever. Before I knew it they were drawing closer. (Important note here: Female REINDEER do have antlers. You, the viewer can draw any gender or breed conclusions you want! DSC_0358

The rest speaks for itself, although I’m not sure what was being said! DSC_0359

They parted ways shortly after, seemingly quite content with their supposedly romantic encounter. Maybe this amorous behavior was sparked by the very unusual warm, spring-like weather  here in New Jersey.

None the less… Ho! Ho! Ho, what a sight, and watch for these two ….in the sky tonight
