Last Vestiges of Winter

It is late March in Northern New Jersey, and dirty piles of leftover snow have just about melted away.  Along back trails of the Ramapo Mountains, streams are flowing again creating interesting shapes and patterns in their melting ice. Sandy, our faithful hiking companion back then, was exhausted after this particular late March day ….in 2006.

A N.J. Brush with Hurricane Dorian

From Island Beach State Park, 24 hours after the passing of Hurricane Dorian, the still angry sea proved alluring to the brave surfers, who were apparently exempt from the otherwise no swimming advisories.

Rebirth in Great Smoky Mts. – Serenely Beautiful

DSC_0314    See updated version of this post (with Zoom In capability)  here

A wonderful five mile one-way roadway just east of Gatlinsburg, Tennessee, in the foothills of Mount LeConte, the third highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains, at 6,923′ (2010 m.) The turn-outs allow access to old growth forest, streams, waterfalls, wildlife and more. Recently, Sandy Paws and I found unexpected tranquility in the resurgence of forest life, ten months after devastating fires scorched the region.

DSC_0548DSC_0654DSC_0643DSC_0550DSC_0660DSC_0637DSC_0675DSC_0620 - Version 2Located in NW New Jersey, Frogg Falls Railroad is the dream and inspiration of our lifelong friends, who have transformed a part of their property to a magical, fully functional garden railroad, complete with a wide assortment of “rolling stock,”  handmade scale structures complemented by remarkable “to scale” living landscaping,  and a Koi and frog populated pond with waterfalls.

Thomas the Train is worried at the sudden presence of Izzy the giant little dog!
